Jeremy’s Thoughts on Childhood

Childhood is a magical time. Our experiences as children are what mold and shape us into the adults we grow into. I grew up on our family grain farm where we shared our driveway with my paternal grandparents and my father’s only brother and his family.

It was a wonderful childhood, I could safely explore the outdoors. I quickly learned the cycles and patterns of mother nature in the crops that we grew and the animals that we raised. Growing up on a farm is wonderful because you learn first-hand where things come from and how life unfolds.

My grandparents taught me the rewards of diligence in the vegetable garden and how to preserve that hard work in the fall by putting the vegetables away in the cellar. My father, uncle and grandfather were committed farmers who taught me the importance of valuing what you own and properly taking care of it.

I spent summers in 4-H programs, bible school and camp. I enjoyed school and always did well. In the fall we would rake leaves and mom would make my Halloween costume. She is still a great seamstress and I remember watching her make clothes for my stuffed animals.

I hope to teach my children the values that were communicated to me as a child. They were excellent examples for me to model.
